The Australian government offers the Skilled Independent visa for those foreign skilled workers who have not been nominated by an Australian employer, a family member or by a state or territory government to work in Australia.
Under subclass 189 visa, Applicants first need to submit the Expression of Interest (EOI) profile through SkillSelect. In their EOI, they need to provide details regarding their educational qualification, work experience, professional skills, English language proficiency and other such information. Additionally, applicants also need to mention why they want to work in Australia. Submitted EOIs are then added to the EOI pool, where they are assessed and awarded points, based on the information provided by the applicants.
EOI pool is where applicants get exposure to Australian employers, and are hired in Australia in accordance to their skills. EOIs with highest score are selected fortnightly and sent an invitation to apply for permanent residency in Australia.
To qualify for subclass 189 visa, applicants need to meet the following requirements.
- Applicants must be below 50 years of age
- Applicants must be nominated (through EOI pool) for an occupation on the skilled occupation list
- Applicants must be at least competent in English
- Applicants must score the minimum points required for the position they are nominated for
The Australia subclass 189 visa remains effective for a period of 5 years. After this period, you need to either apply for subsequent visa, or another valid visa to continue your stay in Australia.
Since applicants don’t already have sponsorship, obtaining Skilled Independent visa pretty much depends upon the EOI. It is advised that you take professional assistance while preparing your EOI.
